Lee Hammond How to draw lifelike portraits from photographs |
This drawing books reviews ...
Great Confidence Booster
This book has helped me to do portraits of my children and some for my co-worker's families. When I first bought this book, I could already draw and have a friend look at it and know who or what my subject was supposed to be, but it wasn't very good in my own eyes. This book has given me the confidence I needed to actually put some of my portraits in frames on my walls. My goal! I love the idea of having pencil portraits of my family as well as regular old pictures, and I was able to do it without commissioning an expensive version. I use partial graphs to help me in the areas I have trouble with and freehand the rest. I also use her example drawings to give me ideas on how features might look if my picture is too tiny to really see it. I tried using a mechanical pencil, but I found that I could avoid a lot of work if I just used regular sharpened graphite pencils and sticks. This was perfect for my friend's 12 year-old son as well. He was able to produce beautiful portraits with the help of Hammond's technique. I think it's better to not need the graphs, but this book is a real confidence booster. If you can draw something and have people ogle over it, it makes you want to do more and better. It gives you a sense of pride in your accomplishments. I recommend this book for beginners and people like me who need a bit of extra help. |
How to draw lifelike portraits from photographs
Very informative book, I have improved my portrait skills dramatically by following the techniques, it arrived on a very timely manner! |
Drawing Lifelike Potraits
I think this book was very informative, it changed my perspective on drawing life like portraits. After going through it and applying the techniques I could instantly see a difference just by using the methods of shading. It was and still is a good alternative tool to use if you are unable to actually receive proper classes. I use it as a reference while I'm drawing. I think some ability to draw is required to use and understand it. Regards, Dennis |
A godsend for the true beginner
Veteran portrait artists love to bash this book. It's understandable: I'm a computer programmer, and if there was a book that taught people with absolutely no previous computer skills to code complete programs in a couple days, even if those programs weren't exactly the same quality, it would irritate the heck out of me.
That doesn't change what this book is, though. It WILL take you from knowing absolutely NOTHING about drawing or art, to making beautiful, amazing, I-cant-believe-I-drew-that portraits in a few days. That's it. That's all it does, that's all it ever pretends to do, and it does it fantastically well.
To try to review this book as if it was written for someone who has already drawn (and sold!) countless portraits is just ridiculous. Douglas Grave's books might be good for that type of person but I can tell you as a BEGINNER, they are way too complex and just completely over my head. This book is simple, sweet to the point, and easy to understand for someone just starting out. The veteran artists that rag on this book just can't grasp this concept.
Another false argument the veteran artists like to toss around is to pretend that this book is meant to be the one and only book that the beginning student of drawing will ever read. So it becomes easy to criticize the choice of the grid technique. This is of course, also ridiculous. The grid system is just ONE technique in a sea of techniques that exist. You are of course meant to keep reading more books after this one and keep learning new techniques to expand your drawing. That doesn't change the fact that this is one of the best places to start. I've learned to free-hand draw in the time since I read this book. But when I started out, I used a grid. I don't regret it in the least.
Will this book make you a real true-blue veteran artist? Of course not. But it WILL give you your first techniques and give you the confidence to find your own drawing 'voice'. If you've never put your pencil to paper but would like to, go though some of the exercises in Hammond's book, and blow yourself away. |
Excellent Book !
This book is truly wonderful ! I have several art books and this one is by far the best. Lee Hammond does a excellent job of teaching without bogging you down with page after page of yammering. She is to the point and the improvement I've seen in my work as I went through this book is amazing. I personally don't think the reviewer who bashed this book knows what he's talking about. He mentions Betty Edwards book Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain as an excellent book... I have that book ! I made it 25% of the way through doing the exercises and such and then had to quit because my joy and enthusiasm had been sucked right out of me with all the droning on and on. I want to learn how to draw not get a PhD in Art Psychology. After that experience I left drawing for over a year. When my desire to draw returned I bought this book from Lee Hammond and I've been encouraged ever since. I'm thrilled with the improvement I've made and how much fun Lee makes learning. If that reviewer knows so much I didn't quite catch the names of his books.? |
