Robert Beverly Hale Drawing lessons from the great masters |
This drawing books reviews ...
This is one of the best books ever!
This is a must have book. No matter what your subject matter you can benefit from reading and doing the exercises in this book. I read it with a highlighter and a pen. I don't usually write in my drawing books, but this one was too good to simply read I had to study it. I will be using this in my current class to help me draw people better. Lots of excellent examples. It doesn't matter what you are trying to learn to draw this book helps you think in terms of mass and shape, not legs, arms, faces, etc.

Must have book for all fine art students!
Robert Beverly Hale is the undisputed master of not only artistic anatomy, methods of drawing and the masters' techniques; but he is also a master at conveying ideas in clear concise language. He was the best lecturer on artistic anatomy. I attended his 10 session lectures twice before he died. The book reflects much of what he taught in his lectures, so it's the next best thing to having him in the room. |
Drawing Lessons from the Great Masters
This is one of the finest books an art student could purchase. It is a treasure. The Great Master paintings are presented which alone is worth it. But Hale has analyzed them in an artistic, not overly anatomical way that makes his lessons sink beneath your skin and pencil. Hale's contribution is priceless. |
Great reference!
This book is a great analysis of past masters drawings. It basically breaks down what is good about the masters techniques. Also, there are some really well thought out chapters on drawing basics as they apply to figure drawing. Definitely worthy of having for a serious artist who draws just about anything. The only issue I had with this book was the condecending use of the word 'beginner' spread throughout the book. It really isn't necessary to insult students while trying to convey a message. But most artists have developed thick skins anyway if they have much experience so it is not something to prevent you from having this book. My drawing has improved just reading this book. |
Back cover
Robert Beverly Hale (1901-1985) was considered to be America's preeminent teacher of artistic anatomy. He was Curator of American Paintings and Sculpture at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and he taught at the Art Students League of New York for forty years. He served as Adjunct Professor of Drawing and Lecturer on Anatomy at Columbia University, and was Lecturer at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and at the Cooper Union in New York. His famous lectures, illustrated with life-size drawings he created on the spot, were attended by students, professional artists, and art educators from around the world. These lectures were compiled and edited by Terence Coyle and published in Master Class in Figure Drawing (Watson-Guptil, 1985). Hale is also the coauthor (with Coyle) of Anatomy Lessons from the Great Masters, and translator and editor of the classic anatomy book Artistic Anatomy by Dr. Paul Richer, both published by Watson-Guptill. |
